Report: Sir Alex Ferguson tips Ryan Giggs to be his successor
The 70 year-old Manchester United manager has tipped the 38 year-old former Wales international as a serious contender to take over the reins at Old Trafford when he retires.
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has reportedly tipped Ryan Giggs to be his heir to the managerial hot seat at the club when he retires from the game.
The issue of succession has long been a source of conflict at the club, with many potential candidates having fallen by the wayside in recent years.Ferguson's most recent plan was to continue at the helm until the 2013-14 season, but he has since reneged on setting himself such a strict deadline regarding his retirement date.
Giggs, who will turn 39 next season, was recently linked with the vacant role as Wales manager after the sad death of Gary Speed, and the player is thought to be keen to stay involved with the game once he hangs up his boots.
Napoli coach Mazzarri banned for Chelsea matches
SSC Napoli coach Walter Mazzarri will be banned from carrying out his duties in both legs of the UEFA Champions League tie against Chelsea FC after a decision by UEFA's Appeals Body.
SSC Napoli coach Walter Mazzarri has been banned from "carrying out his function" for the two UEFA Champions League round of 16 matches against Chelsea FC, on 21 February in Italy and 14 March in England, following a decision by the UEFA Appeals Body.
The Appeals Body has rejected an appeal by Mazzarri against the two-match suspension handed down by the UEFA Control and Disciplinary Body in January for improper conduct at the UEFA Champions League Group A game against Villarreal CF in Spain on 7 December.
A cross-appeal by UEFA's disciplinary inspector was partially admitted. Consequently, Mazzarri is now banned for three UEFA competition matches, with enforcement of the third game suspended for a probationary period of two years.
Appeals Body gives two-match ban to Rooney
England forward Wayne Rooney's three-match suspension has been cut to a two-game ban by UEFA's Appeals Body, with an additional one-match penalty suspended for four years.
The UEFA Appeals Body has reduced a suspension imposed on England striker Wayne Rooney at a hearing in Nyon.
The Appeals Body today decided that the player's red card during the UEFA EURO 2012 qualifier in Montenegro on 7 October should incur a two-match suspension, with a further one-game ban for UEFA national team competition matches only (UEFA EURO 2012 and/or UEFA EURO 2016) suspended for four years, instead of the three-match ban handed down by UEFA's Control and Disciplinary Body on 13 October.
Rooney, who will also spend a day supporting a UEFA project as part of the sentence, was sent off in the 74th minute of the 2-2 Group G draw in Podgorica. He will be banned for England's opening two UEFA EURO 2012 matches against France and Sweden but will be eligible for their final Group D fixture against Ukraine.
Lionel Messi becomes youngest Barcelona player ever to make 200 league appearances
The Argentina international is set to rack up two centuries worth of La Liga matches in the game against Valencia at the weekend, setting a new Blaugrana record due to his age.
Barcelona's Lionel Messi breaks competition record with 19th strike in knockout games
The Argentine, still only 24, surpassed Raul and Andriy Shevchenko with his late strike away to Bayer Leverkusen on Tuesday night. Goles, it is often said in the Spanish-speaking world, are amores. And if that is indeed the case, Lionel Messi surely has plenty of love in his life right now.
The Ballon d'Or winner scored an incredible 53 in all competitions last term and has already added an astonishing 37 in 2010-12 for Barca, playing - as always - with plenty of heart.
So it is perhaps fitting that on Saint Valentine's Day, the much-admired Argentine created his own celebration of love by breaking yet another record, as he surpassed the mark set for goals scored in the knockout stages of the Champions League in Germany on Tuesday, with his 19th strike in games played at the business end of the tournament.
Messi had scored six against Arsenal and 12 others before Tuesday, versus Real Madrid (two), Manchester United (two), Bayern Munich (two), Celtic (two), VfB Stuttgart (two), Lyon (one) and Shakhtar Donetsk (one), to bring up 18 in total, leaving Leo level - at the age of just 24 - with Raul and Andriy Shevchenko, now in their mid-30s and on the verge of retirement from the game.

Messi now has 44 goals in Europe's premier club competition, leaving him sixth on the tournament's all-time list of top goalscorers - behind Raul (71), Ruud van Nistelrooy (56), Thierry Henry (55), Shevchenko (48) and Inzaghi (46) while Cristiano Ronaldo, incidentally, is in 10th place with 31. But almost half of his goals have come in the knockout stages, which is a measure of Barca's success in the competition over the last few years.
